I’m an artist and wood worker who uses oral history, sound and textiles to explore themes of labour, memory and repair. At the heart of my practice is listening, especially to the stories and experiences of working people.
Much of my work is shaped by where I come from. Working with family and my early exposure to labour and its risks, routines, humour and acts of care continues to shape how I think about work, art and storytelling. Later in life, I took up quilting. Akin to wood processing, textile work involves repetition and precision, modes of labour that are gendered in very different ways but familiar to me.
Recently, I have been writing folks songs, curating art shows and exploring how quilting and sound can continue to come together to create what I call “talking quilts.” These pieces are part sculpture, part conversation and offer a more intimate, embodied way of understanding complex issues.
The Mill will be available to experience from 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Friday, August 7 – Sunday, August 9 at the Yellowhouse Art Centre.
We’re grateful to collaborate and produce on the shared, stolen, unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwlitsum and other Hul’qumi’num speaking peoples, as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation, on what is now known as Galiano Island, British Columbia.
